DJ Beens e Sophia Cerù presentano “Stay or Go”: l’intervista

DJ Beens e Sophia Cerù ritornano su Trax Records venerdì 16 maggio con la release di “Stay or Go”. Per l’occasione abbiamo fatto quattro chiacchiere con loro.

Jacopo e Sofia, in arte DJ Beens e Sophia Cerù, ritornano su Trax Records per la loro terza collaborazione. Dopo ”Day & Night” e ”All I Need is Free”, il singolo si aggiunge al ricco catalogo della celebre etichetta di Chicago.

La voce di Sophia e le produzioni di DJ Beens si completano come i pezzi di un puzzle, fatto di melodie armoniose e ritmi dolci ma immersivi. Il risultato è un disco house pronto per il dancefloor di un party Trax.

Ciao Sofia, ciao Jacopo, benvenuti su Parkett. Come state e com’è stato ritornare su Trax Records con la release di ”Stay or Go”?

Ciao Gaia! Grazie per l’accoglienza. Siamo carichi e orgogliosi di tornare su Trax con un nuovo pezzo. “Stay or Go” è una traccia a cui teniamo moltissimo, forse la migliore che abbiamo realizzato finora!

Tra le vostre release mi vengono in mente ”Day & Night” e la più recente ”All I Need is Free”, entrambe su Trax Records. Potete raccontarci com’è nata la collaborazione con l’etichetta di Chicago?

La collaborazione è nata dall’amicizia tra Dj Beens e i D-Beat. La prima release, “Day & Night”, ci è sembrata ideale per la label, così abbiamo deciso di proporla…ed è andata bene!

Come vi siete conosciuti e cosa vi ha spinto a lavorare insieme?

[Dj Beens] Siamo entrambi di Perugia, ma stranamente non ci eravamo mai incontrati di persona. Il primo contatto è stato via social: entrambi facevamo musica e io stavo cercando una voce per le mie produzioni. Sicuramente, la passione per la musica e l’intesa che abbiamo trovato fin da subito, ci hanno spinto a collaborare e a creare questo progetto.

Com’è nata ”Stay or Go” e con quale set up è stata prodotta?

[DJ Beens] “Stay or Go” è nata come tutte le nostre tracce: io ho creato il groove e poi ho lasciato totale libertà a Sofia per la parte vocale.

Quando e come hai iniziato a produrre? Quali sono stati i tuoi primi strumenti da producer\DJ?

[Dj Beens] Ho iniziato nel 2013 usando Ableton e una piccola tastiera!

Ci sono artisti a cui ti ispiri e che hanno contribuito a formare il tuo background artistico?

[Dj Beens] In verità non ci sono artisti a cui mi ispiro maggiormente, però se devo citarne alcuni che hanno contribuito al mio background musicale dico Kerry Chandler, Dennis Cruz, Ilario Alicante e Dirty Channels.

Oltre ad essere una cantante talentuosa sei anche una psicologa cognitivo- comportamentale, due campi apparentemente antitetici ma in realtà, secondo me, profondamente connessi se consideriamo il potenziale curativo di entrambi. Ti è mai capitato di associare la musica a supporto della psicoterapia? Quali sono i limiti e le opportunità in materia?

[Sofia] Sono assolutamente d’accordo! Quando lavori con la musica, la psicologia è ovunque, nei rapporti con gli altri musicisti, e sopratutto, nel contatto emotivo con te stesso. Allo stesso modo, considero l’arte e la creatività fondamentali per stare bene. Mi piacerebbe molto lavorare intrecciando questi due mondi, ci sto lavorando!

Qual è il tuo disco-terapia?

[Sofia] Nei momenti più delicati, ciò che mi fa stare bene sono le voci femminili. I timbri intensi, i testi potenti sono come un balsamo per me. Ne cito solo alcune tra le mie preferite: Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Sinéad O’Connor, Tina Turner, Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith. Potrei andare avanti per ore. 

Dove vi piacerebbe suonare il vostro nuovo disco?

A qualche party targato Trax Records, ovviamente!

Vi ringrazio e concludo l’intervista chiedendovi se siete dei clubbers e lasciando spazio ad una vostra riflessione sulla scena attuale. Grazie per questa chiacchierata!

[Dj Beens] Io mi reputo un clubber, Sofia non troppo! Comunque credo sia cambiato un po’ tutto il mondo del clubbing rispetto a dieci anni fa (in modo negativo) sotto tutti i punti di vista, e penso che il motivo principale siano i social!

Hi Sofia, Hi Jacopo, welcome to Parkett. How are you and how was it to return to Trax Records with the release of ”Stay or Go”?

Hi Gaia! Thanks for the welcome. We are excited and proud to be back on Trax with a new track. “Stay or Go” is a track we care a lot about, maybe the best we have made so far!

Thinking about “Day & Night” and the most recent “All I Need is Free”, both released on Trax Records, can you tell us how the collaboration with the Chicago label was born?

The collaboration was born from the friendship between Dj Beens and D-Beat. The first release, “Day & Night”, seemed ideal for the label, so we decided to propose it…and it went well!

How did you meet and what inspired you to work together?

[Dj Beens] We are both from Perugia, but we had never met. The first contact was via social media: we both made music and I was looking for a voice for my productions. Surely, the passion for music and the understanding we found right away, pushed us to collaborate and create this project.

How did “Stay or Go” was born and what was the set up used to produce it?

[DJ Beens] “Stay or Go” was born like all our tracks: I created the groove and then I gave Sofia total freedom for the vocal part.

When and how did you start producing? What were your first tools as a producer/DJ?

[Dj Beens] I started in 2013 using Ableton and a small keyboard!

Are there any artists who inspire you and who have contributed to your artistic background?

[Dj Beens] In truth there are no artists who inspire me the most, but if I have to name some who have contributed to my musical background I would say Kerry Chandler, Dennis Cruz, Ilario Alicante and Dirty Channels.

In addition to being a talented singer, you are also a cognitive-behavioral psychologist, two seemingly antithetical fields but in reality, in my opinion, deeply connected if we consider the healing potential of both. Have you ever associated music to support psychotherapy? What are the limits and opportunities in this matter?

[Sofia] I totally agree! When you work with music, psychology is everywhere, in relationships with other musicians, and above all, in the emotional contact with yourself. In the same way, I consider art and creativity fundamental to well-being. I would love to work by intertwining these two worlds, I’m working on it!

What is your disco-therapy?

[Sofia] In the most delicate moments, what makes me feel good are female voices. The intense timbres, the powerful lyrics are like a balm for me. I’ll name just a few of my favorites: Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Sinéad O’Connor, Tina Turner, Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith. I could go on for hours.

Where would you like to play your new album?

At some Trax Records party, of course!

I thank you and I conclude the interview by asking you if you are clubbers and leaving space for your reflection on the current scene. Thanks for this chat!

[Dj Beens] I consider myself a clubber, Sofia not so much! However, I think the whole clubbing world has changed a bit compared to ten years ago (in a negative way) from all points of view, and I think the main reason is social media!
