Indie rock vets and ’90s Simple Machines labelmates Tsunami and Ida kicked off their “Coin Flip” co-headlining tour on Saturday night at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock. The tour is named that as they’re flipping a coin each night to determine who plays first/last and Ida won the toss on Saturday and had Tsunami go on first.
Tsunami’s set included “Flameproof Suit,” “Water’s Edge,” “Loud is as Loud Does” and more. The band’s lineup for this tour includes old friend Franklin Bruno (Nothing Painted Blue, Mountain Goats) and for their final song they played “Keeping the Weekend Free” from his and Jenny Toomey’s band Liquorice.
Ida’s set included “Late Blues,” “Maybelle,” “Tellings” and more. When the tour was announced the said the bands plan on “fusing” their sets with collaborations, and that audiences could expect special guests “representing the bands’ wide network of musical friends and heroes” and they made good on that in Woodstock. With the combined forces of Tsunami and Ida onstage, they brought out Kate Pierson to sing The B-52s’ classic “52 Girls.”

The Tsunami/Ida tour hits NYC at Bowery Ballroom on March 29.
