The latest adaptation of hit video game series Street Fighter has been indefinitely delayed by Sony.

The original Street Fighter was released in 1986 and spawned a number of sequels and spin-offs which have sold over 55million copies in total. The most recent entry was 2023’s Street Fighter 6.

The same year, Legendary Pictures acquired the rights to make a new Street Fighter movie, with Sony set to distribute. No details about cast, writer, director or plot were shared at the time but Sony had announced the film would be released on March 20, 2026.

However at the end of 2024, it was announced that the long-standing distribution deal between Sony and Legendary Pictures would be coming to an end.

Last month, The Hollywood Reporter claimed Kitao Sakurai was set to direct the project, taking over from Danny and Michael Philippou but, in a change to their release calendar, Sony has now removed the Street Fighter film entirely. It’s not currently known if the project has simply been delayed or if it’s been scrapped altogether.

In 1994, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue starred in the first Street Fighter film and a reboot [Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li] followed in 2009, but both films were critical and commercial flops.

Sony is currently working on live-action adaptations of Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn. The studio has also confirmed plans for a “faithful” Resident Evil movie and is involved in the live-action Legend Of Zelda film.

Fighting game fans do have Mortal Kombat 2 to look forward to though. The sequel to 2021’s rebooted Mortal Kombat is due out October 24 and will see The Boys’ Karl Urban join the cast as fan-favourite Johnny Cage.

His Boys’ co-star Jack Quaid recently revealed his dream role would be to star in an adaptation of Bioshock but also responded to fans casting him in a Max Payne movie. “I’ve seen people say that I look like Max Payne and when I looked at the box art, I did a double-take,” he offered.

In other news, Nintendo fans think new Switch games will be announced in the coming days ahead of the big Switch 2 presentation next week.
