The Swell Season will on on a proper tour this summer but Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová were in NYC this week for an intimate show, a film screening, and an even more intimate impromptu show at an East Village pub.
First The Swell Season played City Winery on Sunday (3/23) and their set included the duo’s songs, plus solo songs by Glen and Markéta, plus a few covers and an a capella encore that ended with “Say It to Me Now” by Glenn’s band The Frames. They also played a new song, “People We Used to Be,” which will be officially released Wednesday, March 26.
On Monday night, Glen and Markéta first stopped by Anthology Film Archives for a screening of a film they are involved in — details TBA — and afterwards invited folks to nearby long-running East Village pub The Scratcher, where they played a surprise set. Some guest musicians and notable attendees included photographer Danny Clinch (on harmonica), some of the touring cast of Once (The Musical) as vocalists, musician Ken Griffin (August Wells, Rollerskate Skinny), Evangeline Young, and Bob Odenkirk.
Check out photos of both shows by Sachyn Mital, plus the City Winery setlist, below.
The Swell Season’s summer tour hits Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre on July 26.
