The “Smallville” Animated Sequel On Hold

A few months before James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios relaunches Superman with a new movie starring David Corenswet in the role, it seems one potential Superman revival is off the table.

Back in 2021, actors Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum teased that a potential animated series revival of “Smallville” was in the works – one that would pick up right after the events of the tenth season.

Not much has been heard about it since, but “Smallville” co-creator Alfred Gough is now saying the project has been put into its own Phantom Zone.

Appearing with the two actors on their Talk Ville podcast, he says the regime change at DC Studios has taken the project off the board… for now:

“That is the thing, I think the problem with most projects in development in any studio and/or any network is regime change. Warners has obviously gone through a lot, and I think the fact that they are in the process of rebooting Superman again, kind of unfortunately, I think, keeps our thing off the table for a bit. Everything comes around in one form or another, I just read the other day that they are rebooting Buffy for Hulu.”

Both Gough and co-creator Miles Millar were behind the animated follow-up with at lease some of the cast onboard. Gough and Millar are themselves occupied with “Wednesday” over on Netflix.

Welling and Erica Durance did reprise their roles on screen in 2019 for the Arrowverse’s crossover “Crisis on Infinite Earth” event on the CW.
