Flooring brand Forbo explains how its linoleum surfacing material uses natural, raw materials to create a versatile finish in this exclusive video produced by Dezeen for the brand.

Called Furniture Linoleum, the product is primarily made from natural materials such as linseed oil, wood flour and limestone, and can be used across a variety of furniture applications including desks, stools, kitchens, cabinets and doors.

According to Forbo's head of key account management Alexander Wenzel, sustainability is a key pillar of the product.

"Our furniture linoleum is climate positive, without any offsetting," said Wenzel. "We use one hundred per cent green electricity."

Furniture Linoleum is described by the brand as "cradle to gate", meaning that the product's life cycle and environmental impact are assessed from raw material extraction through to leaving the factory gate.

According to the brand, the material has antibacterial and antistatic properties, making it also appealing to kindergarten schools and hospitals with higher hygienic requirements.

"Dust does not stick to the surface and it's inhibiting the growth of bacteria," Wenzel explained.

Furniture Linoleum was described by Wenzel as having a matte finish, with a feeling similar to wood and leather.

The product can be found across a variety of showrooms, including Danish design company &Shufl in Copenhagen.

"When have you ever wanted to actually touch your kitchen, maybe even give it a hug?" asked Lotte Hyldahl, Founder of &Shufl.

"I know it sounds a bit strange, but it's such a soft material, it feels good to the hands."

Furniture Linoleum comes in a range of contemporary colours.

"The colour palette was interesting to us," Hyldahl said. "It was soft colours, classical colours, colours that were not going to be out of fashion in a few years."

The brand is debuting its colour collection at Galleria Rossana Orlandi during Milan Design Week from 7 to 13 April.
