Japanese Breakfast add intimate NYC release show to tour

Japanese Breakfast‘s new album For Melancholy Brunetes (& sad women) is out this Friday (3/21), and they’ve announced a special NYC show to celebrate its release. They’ll play a stripped down set at East Harlem’s El Museo del Barrio on Saturday (3/22), titled “The Melancholy Recital.” Tickets are currently sold out, but you can join the waitlist.

“Dear friends,” Michelle Zauner writes, “In 2021, after a year of lockdown, I emerged with an album about joy. Having quietly passed a year inside without seeing anyone, I suddenly found myself in front of thousands of people, playing on television. It wasn’t lost on me what a miracle that moment was for my life and career, yet I was consumed by stage fright and often found myself longing for my carefree beginnings; nimble, acoustic shows in more intimate settings, cheaper ticket prices, homespun, thoughtful details that connected me directly with the people who cared about my music.”

“Unlike boisterous Jubilee, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) is quite delicate,” she continues. “It is our first album, I think, that has the ability to hold its own in a stripped down format as well as in its full production. As we’ve pared down the arrangements for this evening, I wanted the stage design to foreshadow our upcoming tour production in a similarly stripped down fashion, as if it were a grade school recital. I’ve been daydreaming about this night for many months now, working with my brilliant friends to create a special performance. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did putting it together, and that we see you again out on the road for The Melancholy Tour!”

Ahead of that, Michelle will do a Grammy Museum-presented “New York Evening” at National Sawdust tonight (3/19), where she’ll perform and appear in conversation with Arooj Aftab.

Japanese Breakfast’s tour with Ginger Root begins at Coachella next month, and includes four NYC shows, on May 9, 10, 11, and 12 at Brooklyn Paramount. See all dates below.
