Jon Bernthal Refused To Return For Old Born Again Plus Vanessa Actress On Bizarre Casting Change

The Daredevil: Born Again do-over is the subject today as Jon Bernthal says he refused to return for the previous version of Born Again. Plus, Vanessa actress Ayelet Zurer says she never understood the casting changes in the previous version. Zurer’s role of Vanessa was recast initially with actor Sandrine Holt. In fact, as Zurer points out to TV Line, the only cast members returning initially were D’Onofrio and Cox.

“I never really quite understood why they made that decision to not keep not just me but more almost all the actors but Vincent and Charlie. But I can say that when they did change the creative and decided to go back to the original cast, I was very, very happy to join. Because I really like that character, and I thought there was so much more to explore with her.”

Meanwhile, speaking with EW, Bernthal, who returns in Episode 4 as Frank Castle, AKA Punisher, says he refused to return for the original version.

“Ultimately, I didn’t see it. I didn’t see the version of Frank, and what they wanted from Frank [didn’t] really make sense to me and I thought would not appeal to the fans and wouldn’t be congruent,” the actor explains. “It was not something I was really interested in doing. So we had to walk away.”

Of course, he has now returned and Bernthal hopes it leads to the Frank Castle he wants to play in the future.

“It was like, Let’s see if this works,” the actor tells Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive interview. “Let’s see if there’s a real openness and a hunger to let Frank be what Frank is, which is dark enough to have the courage and the boldness to turn your back on the audience and to make it difficult, to make it enormously psychologically complex and to steer away from any cuteness or humor and to really go full bore.”

“I feel like it’s opened the door to getting closer to the Frank Castle that I really, really want to portray.”
