Richard Roeper’s time at the Chicago Sun-Times is almost up, with the veteran film critic announcing on Wednesday he has accepted a buyout offer from the paper. His last day at the Sun-Times, which has been his home for 37 years, will be Friday.
“I’m excited for the next chapter in my career, as I have no plans of retiring or even slowing down,” Roeper said in a statement. “I will continue to review films and TV series every Friday on ‘Windy City Weekend’ on ABC-7 Chicago, and I’ll keep recording new episodes of ‘The Richard Roeper Show’ podcast every week. I also intend to continue writing reviews regularly. See you at the movies.”
The Chicago native gained national fame in 2000, when he joined fellow Chicago film critic Roger Ebert on “At the Movies.” Roeper replaced the late Gene Siskel as Ebert’s full-time co-host on the show, where they would rate and debate the latest movie releases. Roeper co-hosted the show until 2008.
He has remained busy since then, writing 1-2 movie and TV reviews each week for the Sun-Times, while also hosting his weekly podcast.
Terms of Roeper’s buyout were not disclosed, and the paper has not said if anyone will fill the void left by his departure. His exit from the Sun-Times, where he started in 1987, comes as the media and newspaper businesses have taken a hit in recent years. Last month, more than 40 Los Angeles Times staffers took buyouts from the paper. Other major outlets, including ABC News, Vox and The Washington Post have laid off employees since the start of 2025.
