Zaslav Wants Warners Focused On Big IP

Warner Bros. Pictures holds its big CinemaCon presentation tomorrow afternoon with studio bosses Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy taking the stage – potentially for the last time.

As reported over the weekend by Bloomberg, Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav is already reportedly speaking with potential candidates to replace them.

Between “Joker Folie a Deux,” “Mickey 17,” “Sinners,” and upcoming films from Paul Thomas Anderson and Maggie Gyllenhaal, the pair have become known for spending big on filmmaker-driven fare – something that hasn’t paid off so far.

THR now reports that sources close to the situation say Zaslav wants the studio to put its focus very much on big IP and if any big spending is happening, it should be on their known franchises (ie. DC, Dune, Godzilla x Kong, etc.) as opposed to auteur-driven original projects.

DC Studios co-heads Peter Safran and James Gunn will also reportedly appear on stage to tease “Superman” and other titles on their slate tomorrow, Safran being seen as the potential favorite to take over from De Luca and Abdy.

A lot is riding on “Superman” though, which is expected to be a potentially defining film not just for Gunn and Safran’s future but for the studio as a whole.
