Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino appeared on screen during Lionsgate‘s presentation at CinemaCon on Tuesday and teased his new adaptation of author Bret Easton Ellis’ “American Psycho”.
In a video speech to the crowd, the director said: “we are really working hard to bring to the screen a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho, a book that I deeply love that is something that influenced me so much.”
He then confirmed that Scott Z. Burns, the writer of the film, is “doing an incredible job” and that “the script is coming out very handsomely.” He also confirmed that conversations are underway with “very exciting performers to play the leads.”
Frenesy Films is backing the project which is expected to be a whole new take on the novel as opposed to a remake of director Mary Herron’s previous film adaptation in 2000 which starred Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman.
That film adaptation grossed over $34 million on a $7 million budget and developed a cult following. The book centers on a wealthy, narcissistic and vain young Manhattan investment banker who lives a double life as a serial killer.
Sam Pressman is producing the new project. “Challengers” and “Queer” director Guadagnino next has “After the Hunt” hitting cinemas starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield.
