Nintendo Switch 2 game price hike causes concern

After the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct today, tons of little details about the upcoming console and its games have started to come out causing concern across the gaming community. One that has struck a chord with many gamers is Nintendo’s new pricing for games, which sees its upcoming Mario Kart World priced at $80.

Will PS5 games hike its prices like the Nintendo Switch 2?

During the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, a major detail was left out of the presentation: pricing. After the event was done, questions on what this new piece of hardware and its games would cost circulated. As more details came out, at least two games now have an official price tag. Donkey Kong Bananza will cost $69.99 MSRP, while Mario Kart World will cost $79.99.

It should be noted this is for the base game for each. It is not unusual to see a game priced at $69.99. Just about every new big release for PS5 has the same price tag. However, $79.99 for a base game is unprecedented and has some gamers worried companies like Sony may follow suit.

In a Reddit post on the Games subreddit, gamers have voiced their concerns about the price hike.

“I swear if this becomes the new standard I just wont buy games at launch anymore,” said one Reddit user. “There’s far too many games to care about buying new ones at launch.”

“The first company to do it, and it’s the big boys. Publishers are quickly going to follow suit,” said another. “I have disposable income, but I don’t think I can justify purchasing that amount on a game. Especially as a physical collector. I think this is my turning point, it’s so genuinely upsetting.”

Additionally, the pricing concern is amplified due to a possible price difference between physical and digital versions of the same game. According to the UK Nintendo Store, there is an £8 (roughly $10) difference between digital and physical versions of both Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza. If this is also true in the U.S., that means Mario Kart World could cost $89.99 for the physical version. Not only is that a significant increase in base game pricing, but there being a price difference between physical and digital copies isn’t normal.

Out of all the video game companies out there, Nintendo was probably not the one many gamers thought would usher in a new price hike for games. Many seemed convinced Grand Theft Auto 6 would be the first to test this out. We’ll just have to wait and see if Sony, Microsoft, and other publishers will follow suit.
