British Airways has now implemented the widely disliked changes from the Executive Club to “The Club,” which were announced quietly between Christmas and New Year—presumably hoping few would notice the awful program “enhancements.”

Status earning has shifted from Tier Points to what is essentially a spend-based model, with some bonus earning opportunities on the side.

Members are supposed to be able to earn Tier Pesos on credit card spending as well, though those details haven’t yet been announced (likely due to ongoing negotiations between Amex and IAG).

GGL Card Before May 1

Last month, I wrote about my plan to get as close to the Lifetime Gold requirement as possible by March 31, 2025 (read it here), and I’ll be posting an update on that tomorrow.

BA400 Boarding Pass

My last flight for the Gold for Life run was the final segment of a QF-issued round-the-world ticket—one that had already caused me headaches when BA forced a misconnect in London and refused to rebook me, even though I was still on the ground in Cairo at the time:

When I boarded this BA flight to Cairo, all my other flights had already been posted to my Executive Club account, and I was sitting at 34,845 Tier Points.

BA Flight Tier Points Conversion

The BA400 flight, taken Monday night, was just posted to my new Club account today. I’m still waiting for the AY HEL-LHR flight from earlier that same Monday to post.

My lifetime 34,645 Tier Points were converted into 547,565 Tier Pesos. The new lifetime requirement for Gold is 550,000 Tier Pesos—which is essentially the equivalent of spending £550,000. (In short: absolutely nuts.)

The BA flight from Monday was posted today with 8,235 Avios and 1,258 Tier Pesos, giving a conversion ratio of 1,258 / 80 = 15.725.

If the Finnair flight posts with a similar Tier Peso amount, that should put me just over the 550,000 lifetime Tier Peso threshold—securing Gold for Life (Emerald).

Conclusion

I’m relieved to have crossed the finish line for Gold, but I still feel strongly that BA intentionally gave only three months’ notice about the program change—right before the New Year—and has been almost completely silent since.

This week, there has been zero communication from BA about the changes, likely because they know just how universally hated they are. I suppose it’s easier for BA/IAG/Avios HQ to pretend that business is as usual and that these changes are somehow welcomed by members.

But with these changes—and now that I’ve secured what I wanted from BA—it’s clear that I’ll be exiting this ecosystem once I’ve burned through my 800K Avios and six upgrade vouchers.

If Silver, Gold, or Gold Guest List status comes naturally under the new Club structure, then sure, go for it. Just make sure you’re not throwing money at a subpar product and loyalty program when far better options exist.
