It was Amazon MGM Studios’ turn at CinemaCon and with it came not just footage but a number of project announcements – from new titles to release windows and more.
First, Studio execs Courtenay Valenti and Sue Kroll confirmed that producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman have begun work on the next James Bond movie in the UK. They added that the pair couldn’t be there tonight because they were “getting started” and promised this would be a “fresh, exotic new chapter.”
Next, the company confirmed they have 14 theatrical releases planned for 2026 – even as only five have officially scored release dates so far. They did confirm the new “The Thomas Crown Affair,” directed by and starring Michael B. Jordan, will be coming next year and is currently in production in the UK.
They’re moving forward on “I Play Rocky,” a Peter Farrelly-directed film that follows a young Sylvester Stallone and his journey in trying to get “Rocky” made. Also a go is “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” the Bassam Tariq-directed film starring Mahershala Ali as an assassin dealing with loneliness.
Another moving forward is the film “Is God Is,” starring Kara Young and Mallori Johnson as twins who set out an odyssey-fueled journey to fulfill the wish made by their dying mother. That wish? Kill their father (Sterling K. Brown).
Along with the “Masters of the Universe” reel already reported, two films set for later this year and four for 2026 were teased:
Project Hail Mary
The biggest surprise was the first trailer for “Project Hail Mary,” the new project based on “The Martian” author Andy Weir’s novel of the same name and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“The LEGO Movie”). Sandra Hüller also stars.
Gosling plays a schoolteacher-turned-astronaut who awakens from a coma in a stranded space station with no recollection of recent events. The film reportedly boasts something of a blend of comedy and space epic tone, and in one sequence, Gosling’s character encounters a friendly extraterrestrial.
After the Hunt
The first trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt” screened with Andrew Garfield starring as academic Harry (Andrew Garfield), who speaks about society’s fear of saying the wrong thing. Ayo Edebiri plays his teacher’s assistant, while Julia Roberts plays an old friend of Harry. Edebiri’s character accuses Harry of sexual assault, and soon, things spiral out of control.
Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Story
The first footage from the family-friendly whodunit comedy sees Hugh Jackman as a shepherd who is murdered. His beloved sheep set out to solve his murder – helped by a strong cast including Molly Gordon, Emma Thompson, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, and Hong Chau.
Crime 101
A trailer for the old-fashioned crime thriller sees Chris Hemsworth as a jewel thief who works with an insurance broker (Halle Berry) as he pulls off heists along the West Coast. Mark Ruffalo plays a police detective pursuing him. Nick Nolte, Monica Barbaro, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Barry Keoghan also star in the film which hails from director Bart Layton (“American Animals”).
Mercy
A first look at the real-time sci-fi thriller sees Chris Pratt as a police chief who is trapped in a court trial administered by an AI (Rebecca Ferguson). Accused of murdering his wife, the cop has just 90 minutes to prove his innocence.
Verity
A trailer was screened for Michael Showalter’s gothic, psychosexual thriller adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-seller. It stars Dakota Johnson as a struggling woman hired to help ghostwrite for a famous author (Anne Hathaway) who is unable to finish her novel due to a debilitating accident. Josh Hartnett plays the author’s husband who hires her.
