Kaiju No. 8 Mission Recon Review: Good Recap, Great Special Episode!

Kaiju No. Eight: Mission Recon is a recap movie, made up of a big chunk of Season 1 of the Kaiju No. 8 series and a special original episode “Hoshino’s Day Off”. Oh, you’ve never heard of this series? Well let’s fill you in!

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

Kaiju exist, they’re big, and they’re taken down by the Japanese Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. However, given their size, there’s an equally big mess to clean up after they’re defeated. That’s where Kafka Hibino and his fellow monster disposal crew mates come in.

This job means learning everything there is to know about Kaiju anatomy, up close and personal, and while it’s gross work, this will come in handy for Kafka when he decides to pursue his former dream of joining the JAKDF, to stand side by side with his childhood friend, and certified badass Mina Ashiro.

However, things get weird when recovering from injuries sustained during training, and Kafka finds himself transformed into the very thing he is trying to kill… A Kaiju.

SHOULD I SEE IT IN THEATERS?

The movie is enjoyable getting a B+ from this writer, and while it’s not a replacement for Season 1 (currently available on Crunchyroll), newbies to the series could see this in theaters and then watch the last 3 episodes of Season 1 to get a solid grasp on everything for Season 2, which is coming in July. Fans of the series may also enjoy seeing some of Season 1’s best fights on a really BIG screen! Plus, “Hoshino’s Day Off” is a lot of fun, with a heartwarming story of how soldiers connect with the citizens they protect!
