Portishead’s Beth Gibbons brought her gorgeous solo tour to Beacon Theatre (pics, setlist)
Portishead‘s Beth Gibbons began her first-ever North American solo tour at Big Ears on Friday, and on Tuesday (4/1) she stopped in NYC for a show at Beacon Theatre. It was mostly the same gorgeous set that she played as Big Ears — unlike the festival, Beacon Theatre got all of Lives Outgrown, her great 2024 solo debut, with the addition of “Whispering Love” at the end of the main set — and she was joined again by a fantastic seven-piece band featuring multi-instrumentalists Howard Jacobs, Tom Herbert, Eoin Rooney, Richard Jones, Emma Smith, and Jason Hazeley. The crowd was rapt with attention throughout the show and you could hear a pin drop for most of the night, but the biggest reaction of all came when the encore began with a rendition of Portishead’s “Roads.” Beth, ever the introverted frontperson, didn’t talk throughout the night, but she did thank everyone at the very end of the show, gathering the whole band around her to a final standing ovation. Cass McCombs is opening these shows, but unfortunately I missed his set. See pictures from Beth’s set at Beacon Theatre, and her setlist, below.
