Jackie Earlie Haley celebrated April Fool’s Day by posting that a sequel to the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street had been greenlit.
It was a prank, of course, but it begs the question: 15 years removed from the last entry, what is the status of Freddy Krueger?
The Hollywood Reporter asked New Line Cinema President and Chief Creative Officer Richard Brener if a new Elm Street was on the horizon.
“We hope so. It’s complicated because of the rights,” said Brener.
The response is not surprising, but New Line — often referred to as “The House that Freddy Built” — has not publicly commented on Elm Street in some time.
The U.S. rights to the property reverted to the estate of writer-director Wes Craven back in 2019, but New Line maintains the international rights. We’ve heard that the estate was taking pitches, but they need New Line on board or a deal with another different domestic to move forward.
Launched in 1984, the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise features nine films. Robert Englund starred as Freddy in all but the remake.
If nothing else, it seems like fans have a 4K UHD box set to look forward to.
