“The Residence” follows a murder investigation after a body is found at the White House in the middle of a state dinner with Australia — an event that brings at least two big stars from down under into the proceedings.
Pop star Kylie Minogue plays a key role in the drama that unfolds on the Netflix whodunnit. White House chief usher A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito) is found dead as the “Padam Padam” singer performed for the guests. She was originally attending the dinner as a guest, but the staff recruited her to sing at the last minute after Harry Styles backed out. She agreed with the condition that they allow her to spend the night in the iconic Lincoln bedroom.
As detective Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) investigates the crime, her eyes are even set on Minogue — when her insistence on staying in the bedroom begins to interfere with the case.
“I still can’t believe that it worked out. [Kylie ] is so lovely and so game. She just showed up and wanted to contribute in any way that she could for the show … She’s got great comedic timing,” creator Paul William Davies told TheWrap. “I wrote more stuff for her once she was here and clearly up for whatever … It was like a dream come true.”
Another Australian star in attendance was “Deadpool and Wolverine” star Hugh Jackman, though viewers do not actually see his face. Davies said that scheduling conflicts stopped the real actor from filming an appearance, but that did not stop the show from paying tribute to another great Aussie.
“He actually sent us a lovely note,” Davies added. “I like to think that he would have been totally up for it. It sounded like he would have … hopefully he’s amused by it all.”
Minogue and “Jackman’s” cameos are just part of the charm that makes “The Residence” stand out among recent murder mysteries. Aduba leads a massive cast of characters representing 157 suspects in the murder. And don’t worry, all questions get answered by the time the eight-episode journey comes to an end.
“The Residence” is now streaming on Netflix.
