“Euphoria,” “The Walking Dead” and “Wolfs” actor Austin Abrams is being rumored to be in talks for a starring role in “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger’s upcoming “Resident Evil” reboot at Sony Pictures.
DanielRPK reported the rumor and there’s no indication of any other potential cast joining the fray. There’s also no details on his role and whether it’s a known character like Leon Kennedy or Chris Redfield.
The new film is expected to go back to the horror roots of the game franchise and move away from the more action-centered approach of previous movies. Cregger is both directing and co-writing the script with Shay Hatten (“John Wick: Chapter 3”) and is rumored to be scoring as high as $20 million for the gig.
The property has seen multiple screen adaptations, most notably the Milla Jovovich-led 2002 action-horror film which spawned five sequels and generated $1.28 billion in global revenue.
An attempt was made to reboot the property in 2021 with the film “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” which flopped with a gross of $42 million worldwide and mixed reviews. Another attempt was made with a Netflix series in 2022 which lasted a season.
Cregger’s next film, the Josh Brolin and Julia Garner-led horror movie “Weapons,” is set up at New Line and reportedly has been scoring very high at test screenings. It was, this week, moved up several months and is now slated for an August 8th release.
