The Mandalorian And Grogu Seems To Have A Remarkably Small Budget

According to a new report, the next Star Wars movie may be the cheapest as The Mandalorian and Grogu has a remarkably small budget. Collider reports that the film appears to have an overall budget of around $166.4 million. That’s according to the figures revealed by the California Film Commission as the movie was also the recipient of a tax credit to the tune of $21.75 million.

For context this makes The Mandalorian and Grogu the lowest budget Star Wars film since Revenge of the Sith, and that’s not adjusted for inflation. Though for even more context, this is not too short of the cost of a season of The Mandalorian. So there’s definitely more budget on this than the equivalent time in the series it spawned from.

Yet it does also signify a change for Star Wars under Disney’s ownership, which have all been quite high budgets. I may have issues with almost all Disney’s Star Wars movies, but they looked a million bucks on screen.

Should we therefore be concerned that Disney is basically giving us Mandalorian level content packaged for the big screen to extract a profit?

I mean, we should because that’s clearly been the plan from day one. Let’s not kid ourselves here. Disney wants box office money from Star Wars asap. Mando is currently Disney’s most bankable part of the franchise, thanks to mismanagement. However, I don’t necessarily think that means the film will look cheap. That depends on how much director Jon Favreau extracts from that budget. As for whether it’ll be a good film? That depends on a good script, so we will wait and see.
