Promotion: the School of Architecture and Design at IE University has launched its first annual yearbook featuring a curated selection of its students' work.

Published in digital and print formats, the 2023-24 Yearbook for the IE School of Architecture and Design includes work from across the school's Architecture, Urbanism, Design and Real Estate courses.

The catalogue also features research projects from the university's laboratories, which highlight the institution's innovative and multidisciplinary approach.

"This book is intended to capture a year's worth of our collective endeavour to fulfil [the school's] mission, to build that better world one day at a time," IE School of Architecture and Design dean David Goodman said.

Among the selected projects featured in the catalogue is the Kiri Table, an experimental furniture piece that aims to raise awareness about plastic pollution in the oceans.

Developed by students Isabel Peña, Isabel Sánchez and Kayla Vinh as part of the Design Studio II-Product Design – supervised by professor Eli Gutiérrez – the functional table features a blue-coloured geometric design composed of a plastic panel made from recycled fishing nets.

Drawing influence from the fluidity of the ocean, the students experimented with Kirigami folding techniques before cutting the final plastic panel using a computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine.

Another project highlighted in the yearbook is a cordless lamp influenced by the Tizio model, designed by Richard Sapper for Artemide.

The lamp was developed within the semester-long studio titled Hatching the Masters by students Dharika Raj Singh, Leo Matias Imbert and Paolo Millan under the guidance of tutors Fredrick Hellberg, Lara Lesmes and Andrea Caruso as part of the Bachelor in Design course.

Assembling all parts of the lamp, the students designed electrical wiring that ensures safety for its users, along with magnetised elements that allow users to control its lighting.

Another project in the catalogue is The City Under a Tree supervised by professor Izaskun Chinchilla. It showcases the work of student Daniela Figueroa Rozotto, which was completed as part of Design Studio 9 in the Bachelor of Architecture course.

Designing new spaces for the Malaga Trade Fair and Conference Centre and Malaga City Hall, the proposal seeks to balance both private and public events that will attract more people to the area. Initiatives include reducing construction costs through the use of temporary structures and creating a network of bike paths and roofing systems that encourage environmental sustainability.

Also outlined in the yearbook is the Plantae project by Franka Dučiċ while studying for the university's Master of Architecture under the guidance of thesis director Fernando García Pino. The project proposes a residential neighbourhood that integrates lessons from the Dutch relationship with nature and its landscapes.

A bio-based approach to architecture was used for the project, which highlights the use of low embodied-carbon materials such as hemp, reed and cattail.

Another project outlined in the yearbook is Il Nodo, a proposal for a sustainable development in Bologna, in a bid to revitalise the Ravone-Pra area.

Designed by Celma de Almeida-Lavradio, Alberto López Suárez, Khalid Balghonaim, Rabah Arbid, Lagnajeet Paikaray, and Rosalind Griffin, the project was devised in the Global Master in Real Estate Development, under the tutor Jorge Sena.

The project explores urban cohesion, circularity, eco-friendly construction, and low-carbon mobility. The students outlined a public-private sale agreement, the P3 Foundation and advanced water reuse technologies, with strategic partnerships in student housing, retail and fitness.
