Camper vans have an interesting advantage. They are compact, feel personal, and offer a comfortable ride to almost all possible locations where a road can take you. Then arrives the Marylin Onroad – essentially an exhibition vehicle made for Caravan Salon Düsseldorf 2024 – now on the market. It’s a remarkable six-sleeper camper van – you heard that right, designed by German shop Camper Schmiede. If you think the capacity to accommodate six on a long weekend is all that’s good about this van home; hold up and read on!
The Marylin Onroad is built on a MAN TGE van with inviting interiors and transformable outdoor extensions that give an all-new meaning to van conversion. The biggest surprise here hangs right out of the tailgate. A lounger/hammock of sorts, made of a metal frame, support straps, and waterproof fabric stretches out to let a couple – sit upright or lounge – to soak in the panoramic views. Dubbed Soul Floater, it is sturdy enough – even though hanging in the air it feels flimsy – to hold up to 200 kg weight and is comprised to fold away quickly when it’s time to ride on or sleep.
Designer: Camper Schmiede
Of course, the Soul Floater is the intended highlight but what if you don’t find the sunken feel at the tailgate too existing? The team at Camper Schmiede has all types of inhabitants satisfied in the Marylin Onroad. The camper van features a rooftop deck made from lightweight aluminum honeycomb panels along with the walkable solar modules extending the space on the top from where you can sit and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the surroundings. The deck is accessible through a glass hatch right behind the cockpit, above the front dinette.
The van has been converted to sleep six people; therefore, the bedding arrangement is pretty nifty in its own way. The main bed lowers from the ceiling with the push of a button, while the children’s bed below can be commissioned by converting the sitting area, and the rooftop tent is pitched to accommodate an additional two people. And when you’re in no mood to share your ride with anyone else; the back half of the Marylin Onroad can be left vacant to create a movie day with a projector, use it as a mobile office, or set up a garage to haul a bike and your gear.
Up front, adjacent to the sliding side door entry is the tiny kitchen that is meaningfully stuffed with amenities. You get an induction hob, a stainless steel sink, a dinette with swivel cockpit seats, a bamboo table, a portafilter machine, and a Smeg 130l refrigerator. Adjacent you have is a temporary bath and toilet area featuring a Clesana C1 toilet that pulls out of an under-counter cabinet. A rain head shower in the interior is tucked behind a 2m long roller blind which separates the wet room and can also double as a partition between the living area and the rear area.
Since you’re going to be six people on a journey, you can’t be expecting a short night out. For an extended stay therefore, the Marylin Onroad is equipped with a pair of 330Ah batteries, a 3000W invertor, and a rooftop setup comprising a 300W solar array. A 100l fresh water tank takes care of the water needs, including feeding an outside shower, while the gray water is managed by a separate 85l tank. If the entire contraption seems a pleasing buy, you can shell out €269,000 (approximately $290,000) to book one now.
