Note that you can lock in the current pricing if you make the award reservation before the deadline. The new point requirements will kick in if you need to modify the stay later.
Also, any later modifications to the reservation will result in a reprice at the new levels so you should be firm in any reservations you put in now. Of course you can always cancel and get a refund of the points.
These hotels are moving to Hyatt’s highest Category 8:
- Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort, Costa Rica
- Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills
- Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa
- Grand Hyatt Tokyo
- IL Tornabuoni Hotel
- Park Hyatt Tokyo
Brutal – especially for properties like the Grad Hyatt Tokyo or Andaz, which aren’t all that special.
All World of Hyatt March 25, 2025 Award Category Changes:
These are some pretty bad devaluations especially for World of Hyatt members who like to redeem in Japan or Bali. Some European properties were also hit hard.
For many customers with a limited stay profile it definitely makes sense to evaluate if it’s worthwhile to keep collecting points and stays under the World of Hyatt program. I always encourage an annual review based on program changes for all loyalty programs and associated credit cards.
Conclusion
Following this devaluation, there are now even fewer hotels where you can use your Category 4 free-night certificates and an ever-increasing list of Category 8 hotels where you cannot use the Cat 1 – 7 one. This includes the much beloved Park Hyatt Tokyo which is scheduled to reopen in late October or early November following the renovation.
Very few hotels actually went down a category. This practice makes it increasingly difficult for World of Hyatt members who collect their points through hotel spending to redeem them in any meaningful way. It’s hard enough to collect a sufficient amount of points but when it comes to redemptions, these changes in combination with Peak seasonality is really destroying the value of the program.
So, if you’re planning any redemptions for the coming year, make sure to place your reservations in the next three days, even if it’s tentative.
