London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is closed for arrivals and departures until 11:59 PM on Friday, March 31, 2025, due to a power outage. All incoming flights are either canceled or diverted.

A fire at an electric substation in West London has brought the airport down, as it doesn’t appear to have adequate backup systems for irregularities.

London Heathrow’s Announcement:

Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage.

To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March.

Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Passengers traveling through London Heathrow should contact the airlines and have them rebook to services not touching the airport.

Those traveling to or from London Heathrow should contact the airlines for rebooking options for services on other days.

Passengers are eligible for a refund if their flight was canceled.

Those flying on British Airways or from LHR on any airline can seek reimbursement for extra expenses such as accommodation and meals.

Community carriers (EU & EEA) must also provide Duty to Care for flights to London Heathrow that are canceled or delayed due to this fire.

Conclusion

It truly amazes me that an airport the size of London Heathrow doesn’t have secondary or tertiary backup systems for electricity so that it could continue at least some operations in the case of a limited electrical supply.

A fire at one substation can bring the airport completely down?
