Fontaines D.C. have performed their dreamy, synth-y cover of Bring Me The Horizon‘s ‘Can You Feel My Heart’ mixed in with Nirvana‘s ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ for triple j‘s Like A Version Series – check it out below.

triple j has shared Fontaines D.C.’s full performance for its Like A Version series, which sees musicians performing covers of other artists’ work, albeit with their own stylings. This time, Fontaines D.C. visited the triple j studio during their recent Australian tour.

For their pick of covers, Grian Chatten and co. settled on Bring Me The Horizon’s hit song ‘Can You Feel My Heart’ but have done away with all guitars and strings in favour for a synth-heavy sound, resulting in a dreamy, rich take on the track. Their performance also includes a nod to Nirvana’s ‘Heart-Shaped Box’, with frontman Grian Chatten singing its opening verse and chorus to close out their cover.

Watch the cover below.

Speaking on their decision to cover the beloved Bring Me The Horizon song, the band’s Conor Curley explained: “It was Grian [Chatten]‘s idea initially. I think the sound of that song, the kind of electronic elements and just the general vibe reflects stuff we were touching on on our last album ‘Romance’ so it kind of seemed like a good place to start. And it’s a moody, beautiful song.”

As for the significance of ‘Heart-Shaped Box’, Curley went on to share that the Nirvana cut is “probably up there with one of the first songs I learned on guitar in drop d [tuning]”. They nearly swapped out their cover of ‘Can You Feel My Heart’ for ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ while preparing for the triple j performance: “Grian just started it when we were getting the sounds and it was almost a thing of ‘do we switch it to that?’ and use instrumentation”. Ultimately, they worked in bits of ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ into their cover.

Another song Fontaines D.C. considered covering for Like A Version was Crocodiles‘ ‘Groove Is In The Heart/California Girls’ but ultimately decided against it.

The cover comes just days after Fontaines D.C. announced that they would be forced to cancel their South American tour after frontman Grian Chatten sustained a herniated disc and requires “urgent medical attention”.

Prior to that, they performed in Japan – where they debuted the new single ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’ – before embarking on a tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Later this year, Fontaines D.C. will be returning to Europe and the UK for a run of huge outdoor headline shows and festival appearances this summer, including a sold-out stop at London’s Finsbury Park on July 5, Newcastle on July 13, Cardiff Castle on July 30, and Manchester’s Wythenshawe Park on August 15. Visit here for tickets and more information.

As for new material, Fontaines D.C. recently released a new single ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’, which bassist Conor ‘Deego’ Deegan III told NME was inspired by being “in the presence of a newborn child” – the child of guitarist O’Connell.

He also explained that the song was written around the same time as ‘Romance‘ but was simply left off the record as they wanted to keep the LP “concise”. ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’ will be released on vinyl backed by the b-side ‘Before You I Just Forget’ later this year. Visit here to pre-order it.
