Disney+ is set to launch the second and final season of Lucasfilm’s “Andor” series next month, bringing to a close years of work for Oscar-nominated writer/director/producer Tony Gilroy who created and serves as showrunner on the series.
Despite fans being very vocal about getting him to do more “Star Wars,” Gilroy has long maintained he’s moving on to other things – telling The Playlist this week that “it’s time to do something else”.
Gilroy has long said he was never a die-hard fan of the franchise to begin with. In the new interview, he says that despite his desire to try something new, he’s well aware of the legacy he’s created with the series and what it means to his own career overall:
“I don’t think I’ll ever have a chance to work on anything as important as this. This has been the most important thing I’ll ever get to do in terms of how much imagination went into it, how much work went into it, how much of a better writer I became doing it, how much I learned doing it, and how important the subject matter was and the scale of it. It’s hard to imagine that a situation like this would ever come around again.”
One of the big reasons for the show’s success has been along with the standard hero’s journey tale, it also explores some fascinating political themes tied to the rebellion’s rise and the tyranny of the Empire. Gilroy says he was lucky to be able to tell that kind of story via one of the world’s most famous IPs:
“How many people have had a chance to write about it on this scale? And then how many people had a chance to write about it on this scale and get to dramatize it and make it real? It’s never happened before with the most popular IP in the world. I mean, what a trip!”
The final season of “Andor” is spread twelve episodes broken down into four weekly chapters of three episodes each. The first chapter will premiere on April 22nd and run through mid-May.
As for what’s next for Gilroy, The Insneider reported today that he’s teaming with actor Oscar Isaac on a film called “Behemoth” with the script currently being shopped around. All that’s known is that it’s a film drama about a cellist.
