“Andor” Showrunner On Ghorman, AI & Season 2

Ahead of the second season of “Star Wars” series “Andor” hitting the Disney+ service on April 22nd, the studio has announced that the first season’s first three episodes are now streaming free on the Disney+ YouTube channel.

The full first season is also now available on Hulu and will remain so until the new season premieres. Meanwhile for those who want a refresher without having to sit through an entire season, the official Star Wars YouTube channel has released a 14-minute recap video covering all twelve episodes. You can watch that below.

Disney will also shortly release a one-hour live rewatch event on YouTube titled “Andor Season 1 with Tony Gilroy”. Hosted by showrunner Gilroy, it will include a discussion with special guests about the first season, reactions to key scenes, fan Q&A, and behind-the-scenes information.

The releases come as Gilroy has begun promoting the second season of the show and has given a lengthy interview with Collider to discuss various elements of the upcoming season.

One incident the show will cover is the Ghorman Massacre which was briefly mentioned in “Star Wars Rebels” and Empire troops slaughtering peaceful protesters. Gilroy says certain things are canonical – Mon Mothma leaving the Senate, the building of the Yavin base, the first discovery of the Death Star, etc. but with Ghorman it was a different challenge:

“Ghorman, interestingly, is canonical but completely undescribed. It’s a total blank slate. There’s also a bit of confusion about the Ghorman Massacre, and what is the Ghorman Massacre? There’s a lot of confusion within canon. So, it was an opportunity to rebuild in a really significant way.

It’s a very significant part of our show that can do a lot of different things for us. Quite honestly, it’s very expensive to build, so we really want to use it as much as possible so it carries over five different episodes. I’m really confident that the really deep, passionate Star Wars community will appreciate how we’ve straightened out that story.”

Gilroy previously indicated he had planned to release the first season scripts after it aired, but it didn’t happen. He says A.I. is the reason they opted out:

“I wanted to do it. We put it together. It’s really cool. I’ve seen it, I loved it. AI is the reason we’re not. In the end, it would be 1,500 pages that came directly off this desk. I mean, terribly sadly, it’s just too much of an X-ray and too easily absorbed. Why help the f—ing robots anymore than you can?”
