Mariners, Padres To Inaugurate ‘Vedder Cup’ Series

In honor of two of his adopted hometowns, lifelong baseball fanatic and Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder is lending his name to a newly created championship series of games this year between Major League Baseball’s Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres. The winner of the six-game series during the 2025 season will take home the inaugural Vedder Cup, the trophy for which will be designed in consultation with Vedder and include one of his guitars.

Vedder moved to San Diego from the Chicago area as a teenager and was still living there when he was discovered by the future members of Pearl Jam in 1990. As part of the new initiative, the Mariners and Padres will make donations to EB Research Partnership, a non-profit co-founded by Vedder and his wife Jill to further research into the skin disease Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), and will also offer special Vedder Cup merchandise at their official team stores.

In addition, the May 17 matchup between the two teams at San Diego’s Petco Park will double as a Vedder Cup Series theme game, while special tickets will be available for an Aug. 27 game in Seattle.

If the series is tied upon its conclusion, the winner will be the team with the greater run differential throughout the six games. Failing that, the team with the highest exit velocity recorded on a hit will reign supreme.

“We are thrilled that we were able to bring the Vedder Cup concept to life in such a fun and impactful way,” says Mariners EVP/COO Trevor Gooby. “Creating and sharing memorable events like this with Mariners fans is extremely gratifying, and I am very thankful for Eddie, his team, EB Research Partnership and the Padres in sharing the Mariners vision and commitment to celebrating and serving the Seattle community.”

“We’re proud to partner with the Mariners and Eddie Vedder to announce the creation of the Vedder Cup, a special interleague rivalry series that celebrates the unique connection between our cities through the rock legend and Pearl Jam frontman,” adds Padres CEO Erik Greupner. “This West Coast showdown will create some cool, fun, and memorable moments for our fans while bringing meaningful awareness to EB research. We can’t wait to see this rivalry series grow and look forward to battling the Mariners for the Vedder Cup.”

Pearl Jam return to the road April 24 in Hollywood, Fl.
