Following The Wheel of Time S3 Episode 4’s release showrunner Rafe Judkins explains why some of Rand’s flashbacks had to be cut. Folks we won’t be getting into any book spoilers here. However, there will be S3E4 SPOILERS, so be wary if you’ve not watched it yet.
Judkins made an appearance on The Dusty Wheel‘s Episode 4 after show. The video below contains the full show, and Judkins interview is only the first 40 minutes. They also get into book spoilers a tiny bit. Not too much, but be aware if you decide to watch the full interview.
Episode 4 see’s Rand take a trip back in time through the memories of his ancestors. Sadly, not every sequence of events from the books made it on screen. Judkins explains that this was for production cost reasons, sadly. However, he took great care to make sure that the ones that were cut were correct. Moments that would not detract from the overall message being presented to non-book fans. For those of us who are book fans? Well, Amazon decides the budget, what can you do?

“And then for the ones we didn’t use, because I’d written… We actually almost shot two additional flashbacks that I really liked. One being the the Aiel singing at Chora to stop a man who’d gone wild with power, which I thought was really powerful and beautiful. And we had one of, you know, where you sort of get more of the back story of Cairhien and the gift of water and included in that one, we had the maiden with the first short spear.”
“So those, those two were the other two that, like I really wanted to try to get in. But then ultimately, with what we had for time in the production budget, we had to shoot it. Those, to me, felt like the ones that could fall out the most easily, and you could still track the whole story. So we’ve, we thought about it super carefully the whole way through, of which of the flashbacks can we use? Which ones will feel complete and whole to the audience if they watch them?”
“We tried to do a nod to it when Mandein hands the spear over to his wife, and she starts the line of spears. You know, that actress who’s amazing, Jude Georgi, she had originally been cast to play the the first Maiden of the spear.”
I guess with unlimited budget we’d have gotten a longer episode. However, I am personally really happy with what we did get. You can check my non-spoiler review above.
