In a recent interview Daredevil: Born Again’s showrunner details the reshoot changes he made, plus we have positive early reactions from critics. Daredevil: Born Again premieres on Disney+ March 4. Ahead of release new showrunner Dario Scardapane has been out promoting the show. Speaking with Collider Scardapane and exec producer Sana Amanat detailed out exactly what was changed during the reshoot process.

As I’m sure you aware Marvel made the decision to bring Scardapane as showrunner and hire new directors. This was after six episodes of Born Again had already been shot by the previous team.

“Quite a bit lived. The thing is, and I think Sana can speak to this, they had that time during the strike to take a look at what they had, and those six episodes were super solid – I saw them way later,” Scardapane explained. “They were super solid, but the issue was bringing up the themes and feelings that we loved from the old show and context.”

“I’ll say that over and over again. That first episode is the one that takes us into the run, and we needed to have those first 15 minutes of that first episode to set the stage. What we ended up doing was the amount of additional material was essentially three episodes worth, and then quite a bit of interstitial material inside the body of the middle six.”

“I feel like it was mostly enhancement, and it was really bringing up the stuff that we loved a little more. Fisk and Matt, a little more action, pathos. The show was there. It wanted to be something; we just had to do some things to draw that out.”

Amanat added, “And again, credit to Matt Corman and Chris Ord. Those writers, some of which stayed on with us in this new writers’ room, really gave us, also, a naturalistic and real-world New York, as well, and that’s really what we wanted to build upon. But yes, like Dario said, it was elements where we wanted to pull on threads.”

“We wanted to make it a bit darker and more intense and offer that connective tissue that just wasn’t quite there before, but that connective tissue to the previous show, of course, with our returning characters and telling the drama of who they are, almost seven to eight to 10 years later.”

Early Reactions

In addition later today will see the review embargo lifted for Born Again. I’ll try and cover some of those tomorrow if there’s a discussion to be had. In the meantime early reactions from many critics are extremely positive. Most of the critics I read snippets from say they got to watch all eight episodes of Season 1. With that, I’ve been hearing things like, ‘best Marvel TV series to date’, and more on that tune. All of those I read seem super hyped to get this show yearly and can’t wait for Season 2 next year already.

Honestly, the most negative reaction I cam across wasn’t that bad. They compared Born Again to Daredevil Seasons 1-3 on Netflix. Ranking Born Again in number 3. That’s ahead of Season 2, but behind Season’s 1 and 3. I admit Season 2 was the weakest Daredevil Season. However, it was still very good and the critic said the same. I’m hopeful on this one.

However, we may get some more varied opinions later once the reviews hit. I don’t get early access, sadly. Therefore my reviews will come after I watch on Disney+ with you guys episodically.

What do you think as Daredevil: Born Again’s showrunner details the reshoot changes he made? What do you make of the positive early reactions from critics? Thoughts below as always.
