Severance S2E10 Review – Spectacular Finale

Well here we are at the Season 2 finale, so here’s my Severance S2E10 review and I thought it was a spectacular finale. First off I normally cover these reviews with spoilers, but today I’m staying SPOILER FREE. I may get into the weeds on what comes with Season 3, newly announced sometime next week.

I just don’t want to unwittingly spoil anyone the day the finale is out.

Music, Milkshakes and Mayhem

I guess that sums up the frantic and at times extremely surreal nature of this Season 2 finale. Now, regular readers will know I love the surreal nature of Severance. However, if you were rather hoping for something a bit more straightforward, I don’t know what to tell you. You’ve not been watching the show you thought you were.

In terms of answers, this episode provides a substantial amount. Though I won’t describe them here, we get many answers to fans burning questions. What are MDR doing, what Cold Harbor really is, and what the goats are for? Yes, we get answers, but if you were prescribing to the crazier theories out there for what this all meant, you may be disappointed. The truth is much more simple, as is usually the case.

This episode declares to the audience what this show has truly all been about. The Human condition. The show has been building to it, but here we are, Innies versus Outties. Did we really think the Innies would quietly give up their lives at this point? That’s what Severance is about. Sure, we can anesthetize ourselves from the pains of life, but these are human beings who don’t deserve to live a life of utter misery. Complete control for one, is death for the other.

How this will get resolved, if ever, remains a mystery for Season 3?

What we get here though is a conclusion, of sorts. Yet, despite so many answers, the finale raises more questions we want to know going into Season 3. It’s therefore both satisfying and a tease to come back in Season 3 for more. Episode 10 is frantic, it’s often surreal and beautifully shot, and visually there is a lot going on. Musically/ sound design wise also, (Milkshake Dance Alert!) the episode is really interesting and the audio and visual stimuli is attention grabbing.

If I had one minor criticism of the episode itself, it’s more of a gripe on some type casting. It appears like Gwendoline Christie was cast just to be a tall/strong woman for an admittedly good scene in the finale. If Christie’s role isn’t enlarged in Season 3, then they totally cast here for this one scene alone and I kinda dislike that. Christie is a proper actor, give her something to work with Hollywood. Still, it worked well in the context of the finale.

Small pedantic gripe aside, I felt like we got an exciting finale which made sense in this Universe. I genuinely have no idea where Severance goes next in Season 3. I mean, where do you go from here? But I’m keen to find out.

GRADE: A+

Another good Season finale, full of answers, but also teases for more to come in Season 3. Damn good fun.
