Disney’s costly live-action “Snow White” remake is sadly coming in well under expectations. The film reportedly pulled in $3.5 million previews last night and is on track for a $15.5 million opening day (including said previews).
As a result, it’s headed for an opening on par with Tim Burton’s live-action “Dumbo” film of around $46 million. That film cost $100 million less to produce than the $270 million spent on “Snow White”.
A lot will depend on how the movie fares during Saturday and Sunday matinees with family audiences potentially coming out and boosting its fortunes. Still, its a long way from the mid-$60 million projections being thrown about just two weeks ago.
According to Deadline, there has been a definite drop in interest for the film from the demographic that was most expected to turn out – women under 35.
The film’s IMDb rating, which was 2.3/10 after 2,000 votes, appears to have been subjected to review bombing and so has now been hidden. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score is also being kept under wraps.
The other opener this week, the Robert De Niro as twin gangsters film “Alto Knights”, is heading for an opening weekend of just $3 million.
Unlike other Warner titles of late, the $50 million budgeted project from filmmaker Barry Levinson is one that’s seen as a pet project of Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav.
