Former world heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman has died at the age of 76.
‘Big George’ Foreman competed for decades starting in the 1960s and won numerous title belts along with being world heavyweight champ twice and winning Olympic gold.
He lost only 5 out of 81 bouts in his career, 68 of which were knock outs – almost double that of Muhammad Ali whom he fought (and lost to) in the famous ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ event. Foreman officially retired from the sport in 1997 at the age of 48 after becoming the oldest world heavyweight champion in history just two years earlier.
To those outside boxing, he was also something of a TV staple in the 1990s. Foreman became well-known worldwide for his George Foreman Grill, the entrepreneur starring in various TV infomercials for the product which has sold millions since it was made available in 1994.
He also worked for HBO, serving as a ringside analyst for HBO’s boxing coverage for 12 years until 2004. He guest starred as himself on multiple TV series including “The Six Million Dollar Man,” “Sanford and Son,” “Home Improvement,” “King of the Hill,” and “Fast N’ Loud”.
He also starred as George Foster in the 1993 sitcom “George” about a retired boxer who runs an after-school program for troubled kids. That series only lasted for nine episodes before being cancelled.
In 2023 the biopic “Big George Foreman” hit cinemas and starred Khris Davis (“Atlanta,” “Judas and the Black Messiah”) as Foreman. Charles Shufford played Foreman in Michael Mann’s “Ali” in 2001.
Foreman was the subject of the 2017 documentary “Foreman”, and part of one of the most legendary sports documentaries ever made – 1996’s “When We Were Kings”.
