The second season of Apple TV+ series “Severance” came to a close on Friday, the tech giant quickly renewing the highly acclaimed show for a third season after the second proved a big success.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “SEVERANCE” SEASON 2 FINALE
The last four episodes of the season answered quite a few questions that had lingered over the series since the start, but also raises obvious questions as to where do things go from here.
Whereas the first season famously ended on a specific cliffhanger, the second ends in a way that suggests the third season simply can’t go back to the same format and will have to do something completely different.
Speaking with Variety, producer/director Ben Stiller says they wanted to avoid doing the same thing they did with the first season finale:
“There was a brief moment where we thought, maybe we do another cliffhanger where Mark is between Helly and Gemma. But, pretty soon after, we realized we can’t do that again — people will kill us. So, we wanted him to make the choice and set up a dystopian conflict.”
The result is less a cliffhanger and more an open ending as ‘innie’ Mark chooses more life and ‘inner’ Helly. It’s a choice that has led to a divison among the fandom with some people firmly on the innies side, some on the outies side.
On Friday night, the show’s cast and creative team united at PaleyFest LA for a conversation about that ending. One of the highlights was Tramell Tillman, who plays floor manager Seth Milchick, arriving in the auditorium accompanied by the USC marching band. Adam Scott talked about his take on the ending (via THR):
“I think for Innie Mark at the end of the day, [Gemma] is someone he doesn’t know in that way and he crosses that threshold, and the life might be over, he doesn’t quite know, and he’s madly in love with Helly so he had to make a choice for a few different reasons.”
Asked about the fan response to the finale so far, creator Dan Erickson says he’s avoided most of it as they are “deep in talking season three”. What he has seen he’s found “really fun” and interesting to note the fan divide:
“I’m not that surprised. It seems like a lot of people have complex feelings about the end, maybe some divisive things about the end and who is right and who is wrong, shipping different couples which I do understand.”
Ben Stiller was also on hand and confirmed “we’re in the [writers] room and working on” the third season right now.
