The audience scores are in for Disney’s live-action adaptation of their animated classic “Snow White” and the results aren’t great.
The musical fantasy tale ended up taking in $16 million on its opening day on Friday (including Thursday previews), with three-day estimates now standing at around $45 million domestically for its opening weekend, and a haul of around $100 million worldwide by Monday.
Audience scores for the film also likely have Disney concerned. The CinemaScore has been announced for the movie with the title getting a ‘B+’. On its own that’s not a bad score, but not a particularly good one either.
Taken in the context of what the film is, a live-action Disney film adaptation, it’s a worry. CinemaScores are less about quality as much as about meeting or satisfying audience expectations.
Thus, the various Disney live-action adaptations released theatrically to date didn’t have particularly high bars to clear. That has resulted in many of them landing an ‘A’ CinemaScore including “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” “The Jungle Book,” “Cruella,” “101 Dalmatians,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Maleficent” (and its sequel), “Cinderella,” and “The Little Mermaid”.
The worst performers until today were the two “Alice in Wonderland” films, “Dumbo” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” which all scored an ‘A-‘. All other adaptations (eg. “Peter Pan and Wendy,” “The Lady and the Tramp”) weren’t polled as they went straight-to-streaming.
“Snow White” now sets the record as the worst-received of these live-action adaptations from Disney, but oddly enough is still a better score than the B- that Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” received last month or the B that other films currently in the Top 10 scored like “Alto Knights,” “Black Bag” and “Mickey 17”.
On Rotten Tomatoes where the critics score has dropped to 43% (5.3/10), the verified audience score has been revealed and stands at 72% (3.9/5).
The unverified RT reviews, the audience reviews on Metacritic, and the IMDb page have all been review bombed with the latter seeing around 75% of reviews scoring the film a 1/10.
More than a few of those reviews spout ‘woke Disney’ complaints, an interesting argument this week after Variety reported the other day about a proposal submitted by a right-wing think tank that Disney cease the studio’s participation in a prominent LGBTQ rights organization’s equality ratings program and “move back to neutral”. The proposal was put up for a vote to shareholders – the result was only 1% voting in favor of it.
