Tony Gilroy On His Serious Approach To “Andor”

The second and final season of “Star Wars: Andor” is set to air from late next month, bringing with it closure to what has been the most critically acclaimed entry into the canon since Disney acquired Lucasfilm.

One key differentiator of the series to other “Star Wars” material, even Lucas’ original two trilogies, is that it takes things seriously and is very much all about its own drama as opposed to incorporating elements for fan service.

The result is essentially a dark story centered on political ideology that works on its own, regardless of its being dressed up in universally well-known “Star Wars” iconography.

Showrunner Tony Gilroy tells Gizmodo that focus is key to “Andor” and its success because even when tie ins to existing lore happen, it has to feel right:

“We would never add anybody for fun. We’re not going to add anybody for a smile or a wink or anything like that. There’s nothing in there that’s some juicy tidbit just for the hell of it. Everything has to be organic.

That’s been our attitude all the way through: not to be cynical, and to take it more seriously than anybody ever took it. Even while we’re changing – some people feel as though it’s changing a lot – but even while we’re changing the grammar of what you can do, we’re trying very rigorously to be more serious about this s— than anybody ever has been.”

The new season will see organized rebellion having begun to emerge and as Gilroy has confirmed, each three-episode arc will span three days with around a year’s gap between each.

“Andor” will return to Disney+ for its second season from April 22nd with second season blocks of three episodes to air weekly.
