The Multiverse Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been widely criticized for incoherent storytelling. The lack of quality control has resulted in setups with no payoffs, underwritten new characters, and a dramatic shift from the saga’s original big bad in Kang the Conqueror. With the Russo Brothers set to return to the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, expectations for a return to the Infinity Saga’s quality are very high.

During a promotional interview with The Sunday Times regarding their latest Netflix release, The Electric State, Anthony Russo touched on the MCU’s convoluted nature. Their mission is to recalibrate the overall narrative.

“The MCU has got quite large, that’s for sure. I mean, frankly, we struggle with that same issue. But part of the reason Joe and I decided to go back is exactly what you’re talking about. There needs to be more of a central narrative. That was something we were very specific about when we worked with Marvel [before]. We would like to bring the focused narrative back.”

RDJ and the Russos get a massive payday for the next two Avengers films and RDJ was instrumental in getting the Russos back.

Another part of the Multiverse Saga’s problem has been the lack of connectivity between new characters and the general audience. Though MCU fans flocked in big numbers to see new installments of Spider-Man and Deadpool, others like Eternals and The Marvels struggled due to leaning too far into the cosmic nature of the brand. Additionally, the vast amount of homework for audiences to watch the Disney+ shows to understand every new theatrical release has become too much for some fans.

In the same interview, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt who also stars in The Electric State weighed in on what makes the Russo Brothers the right filmmakers to salvage a fatigued MCU.

“They know that it’s the mundane, human brokenness of characters that drives stories and makes the Avengers great. They have this ability to find the humanity.”

As for how they plan to explain Robert Downey, Jr.’s shocking MCU return as Doctor Doom, Anthony Russo remains mum about the subject. But he proceeded by stating “there’s nobody else in the world who could play this character the way he’s about to”.

Do you believe the Russo Brothers can pull back the reins and make the MCU a focused narrative again? Let us know in the comments below.
