Russos On Turning Down “Avengers: Doomsday”

Filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo have spoken about how they repeatedly turned down the offer to “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” until one idea led to them signing onboard.

Speaking to Omelete while promoting “The Electric State,” Joe Russo said Marvel CEO Kevin Feige was the one who came up with the idea of casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, and it was “conversation [that] was had a while ago” suggesting it had been the plan for a while.

Feige pitched them the idea and Downey came in to help close it, but Joe says not even the actor could make them sign on because they didn’t have an approach at that point. What finally got them onboard was a story pitch from screenwriter Stephen McFeely:

“Robert tried to talk us into doing [‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’] and we said ‘no’. We just didn’t have a story. We didn’t have a way in. We were resistant for a while. One day, Stephen McFeely, one of our chief collaborators, said, ‘I have an idea.’ We went, ‘That’s the story!’ That story has to be told; it’s a really powerful story!”

The comments come as scooper MyTimeToShineH is reporting that Feige and Marvel are “getting worried” after seeing the reaction to “The Electric State” which currently sits as the worst reviewed film of the year on Metacritic.

The scooper is also claiming that according to their sources, Doom is not a Stark variant in the film, just one who bears a striking resemblance to the late Avenger. He will use this to “present himself as an ally to the MCU” initially.

Filming on “Avengers: Doomsday” is about to get underway in the UK.
