Marvel’s Star Wars comic universe is expanding once again, and this time, it’s bringing back a fan-favorite antihero for her most unpredictable adventure yet! Announced earlier today by Collider, the rogue archaeologist Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra will headline a brand-new ongoing comic series, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra – Chaos Agent, set to debut in June. Written by rising star Cherish Chen (Radiant Red) and illustrated by acclaimed Star Wars artist Gabriel Guzman, the series will take place in the largely unexplored post-Return of the Jedi era.

Doctor Aphra first made her mark on the Star Wars galaxy ten years ago in the pages of Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca’s Darth Vader comic series. Her morally gray nature, quick wit, and dangerous entanglements with the Dark Lord of the Sith quickly cemented her as a standout character. She then became the first Star Wars character to originate in the comics and later star in her own solo series—both of which ran for 40 issues and were set during the Original Trilogy timeline. Now, with the Empire’s rule at an end, Aphra embarks on a fresh journey in a transformed galaxy.

Set in the wake of the Battle of Jakku, Chaos Agent finds Aphra in a very different position than before: her crimes have been pardoned, and she’s been enlisted by none other than Luke Skywalker himself. But don’t expect her to play by the rules. Tasked with using her legendary treasure-hunting skills for the New Republic, Aphra will be hunting down a rare artifact—one that’s sure to get her into more trouble than ever. Adding to the mystery, Aphra’s iconic tattoos, which have long been tied to her past and abilities, appear to no longer function, throwing another curveball into her latest misadventure.

“In my humble opinion, there isn’t a more fun character to be writing in the Star Wars galaxy than the one and only Doctor Aphra,” writer Cherish Chen told Collider. “Cooking up new adventures for her in this new era, throwing her into increasingly tricky moral quandaries, and testing her resolve (alongside some familiar faces) has truly been like playing in the ultimate sandbox. Our favorite chaos agent is back, and I cannot wait to share what we’ve been working on and for you all to see Gabriel’s incredibly dynamic art.”

Following the launch of Alex Segura and Phil Noto’s flagship Star Wars series in May, Doctor Aphra – Chaos Agent will mark the second major title in Marvel’s ambitious new era of Star Wars storytelling. Fans eager to return to Aphra’s unpredictable world can check out stunning cover art by E.J. Su, Sara Pichelli, and Karen S. Darboe and preorder Star Wars: Doctor Aphra – Chaos Agent #1 at their local comic shop today.
