More Xbox IP Films & TV Series Coming

Xbox chief Phil Spencer says the upcoming “Minecraft” film is just the beginning of a push for more films and TV series based on IP owned by Microsoft and its Xbox brand.

Speaking to Variety, Spencer was asked about the recent surge of video game to screen adaptations like “The Super Mario Bros Movie” and “Sonic the Hedgehog” films along with “The Last of Us” and “Fallout” TV series.

Spencer says Xbox is still “learning and growing” how to adapt its games to film and TV, citing the short-lived “Halo” TV series which had a mixed reception and was cancelled after two seasons.

“We learned from doing Halo. We learned from doing Fallout. So all of these build on themselves. Obviously, we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is you’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.”

Combined with their acquisitions of Bethesda, Zenimax and Activision-Blizzard, Xbox now owns a library of IP that could make for strong screen adaptations with properties including “Gears of War,” “Dishonored,” “Wolfenstein,” “Call of Duty,” “Wolfenstein,” “Doom,” “Quake,” “Gears of War,” “The Elder Scrolls,” “Diablo,” “Overwatch,” “Fable,” “Crackdown,” “State of Decay,” “Perfect Dark” and more.

Next month will be a big one for game-to-film adaptations with “A Minecraft Movie” and “Until Dawn” films hitting cinemas while “The Last of Us” Season 2 hits HBO and a “Devil May Cry” anime series hits Netflix.

Meanwhile screen adaptations of games like “God of War,” “Horizon: Zero Dawn,” “Tomb Raider,” “System Shock,” “Mass Effect,” “Disco Elysium,” “Life is Strange” and more are in development.
