All Sean Baker Movies in Chronological Order

While many people seem to have just learned his name with Anora, Academy Award-winning director, writer, producer, and editor Sean Baker has been making movies for twenty-five years. I thought it would be beneficial to go through all of his movies so you can check them out when you have the time.Let's dive in. Four Letter Words (2000)Baker's directorial debut offers a raw look at the perspectives and language of young men in suburban America. This movie reminds me of...me. It's guys hanging out, throwing verbal and actual punches, and figuring out masculinity. Take Out (2004)Co-directed with Shih-Ching Tsou, this film follows an undocumented Chinese immigrant in New York City who must raise $800 to pay off a smuggling debt. It delves into the manic lives some people live and how much money equates to power. Prince of Broadway (2008)In a very contemporary take on fatherhood, a street hustler in New York City discovers he has a son. This movie sort of solidified Baker as a fearless traveler of the underworlds we never knew existed. Starlet (2012)I remember the buzz of this movie. It was the first Baker movie I saw, and it follows the unlikely friendship between a young woman and an elderly woman. What struck me was the tenderness of the camera and how much you could tell he cared about the characters. Tangerine (2015)After my viewing at the Arclight in Hollywood, I just drove around La Brea for hours, watching people with my then-girlfriend. I worked right at the corner of Santa Monica and La Brea and saw these gals every day. The movie was mind-blowing. The Florida Project (2017)To me, this is one of the best movies ever made about America. It should be on any list when it comes to auteur directors tackling subjects. It's a staggering achievement about coming of age and dealing with very adult reality. Red Rocket (2021)A washed-up porn star who returns to his small Texas hometown, and inside all the darkness, you find places to laugh much harder than you ever thought possible. It's a movie that makes you uneasy rooting for the bad guy and then feeling very guilty for it. Anora (2024)Anora follows the story of a New York Sex worker who marries the son of a wealthy Russian Oligarch. It just won all the Oscars. If you haven't seen it, you should. It's entering the cultural lexicon thanks to its Oscar win, making Baker a household name. Summing up Sean Baker Movies Baker is one of my favorite filmmakers. Though made his way struggling through the indie film scene, it has been a blast seeing him play with bigger and bigger budgets. He always makes such personal stories that echo inside anyone who watches them. Let me know about your favorites in the comments.
