20th Century Studios is adapting a short story titled Ripped, THR reports this afternoon, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (The Smashing Machine) on board to produce the film.
The short story was written by Joe Ballarini. Is this a genre project, you ask? THR notes, “Ballarini is set to adapt his short story. Separately, the writer has landed a deal with Simon & Shuster/Atria’s new horror imprint 12:01 Books to expand the short story into a novel.”
If a horror imprint is turning Ripped into a novel, that definitely suggests it’s a project that at least falls somewhere in the realm of the genre. The plot synopsis, well, it sounds similar to recent horror movies including A24’s Opus and the upcoming Jordan Peele-produced Him.
THR details, “The logline concerns an insecure man who, in anticipation of his wedding day, enters a hardcore underground training facility led by a magnetic fitness guru, who commands cult like devotion with the promise of peak performance at any cost.”
According to the outlet, the very ripped Dwayne Johnson isn’t attached to star.
Seven Bucks and 12:01 Films will produce, with Ballarini writing the screenplay. Ballarini is the writer of Netflix’s A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting, based on his own book.
