Ahead of the first trailer on Thursday, the first photos and a new featurette are out from “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” the fourth and seemingly final film in the mainline franchise following the 2013 original, 2016 sequel, and 2021’s “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It”.

Michael Chaves, who helmed that third film and more recently the 2023 spin-off “The Nun II,” is back to direct this while franchise stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson return as Lorraine and Ed Warren.

While the films of the series have had their ups and downs, the mainline films have been the most well received. Key to that is Wilson and Farmiga’s chemistry and performances that has received wide acclaim.

Speaking with EW, Farmiga says her times with her co-star is what she’ll miss most:

“That’s just the absolutely best arranged marriage in the history of arranged marriages. I’m going to miss Patrick most of all. I mean, not really. He’s reachable within seconds on text. But I’ll miss him as a fun scene partner who totally understands my kind of neurology, who vibes with my brain in a way. I love that guy. I’m so blessed to have had him by my side. He made all of these life-zapping, exhausting exorcisms feel like a family barbecue.”

Wilson feels the same, saying: “I think that’s why when you say, ‘Can you imagine it being over?’ I actually can’t imagine it really because of her. It really meant the world to me… I get emotional. I can’t imagine not doing a movie with her.”

The new entry sees the pair called out of retirement to investigate the Smurl family haunting – a Pennsylvania family who alleges that a demon inhabited their home between 1974 and 1989. The Warrens were brought in to investigate in 1986.

Mia Tomlinson, Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadsdon, Tilly Walker, Molly Cartwright, Peter Wight, and Kate Fahy co-star in the film which will be released in U.S. cinemas on September 5th.
