The Nintendo Switch is one of the most successful gaming consoles of all time and easily the most popular console of its generation. But now, Nintendo is returning with a follow-up in the form of the Nintendo Switch 2. One of the most notable aspects of the new console is its redesigned hardware, which not only enhances usability, but also makes the device feel more polished and versatile overall.

Some of the design changes are more immediately noticeable. For example, the Switch 2 is larger than the original model, and that added size makes room for a bigger display.

While the increased dimensions might make the Switch 2 a bit harder to hold in portable mode, Nintendo has taken steps to improve its ergonomics. The Joy-Con controllers that attach to the sides are now more rounded, offering a better grip and a more comfortable gaming experience. The new Joy-Cons also feature a sleeker look, primarily black with blue accents on the left and red on the right – an upgrade from the original’s bright neon color scheme.

Nintendo has also redesigned the kickstand, addressing one of the major complaints about the first-generation model. The flimsy, off-center stand has been replaced with a much larger, sturdier one that spans nearly the entire back of the console, significantly improving stability when propped up.

Of course, the updates to the Switch 2 go beyond just its physical design. Internally, there are a number of meaningful improvements. The new console includes a more powerful processor, likely enabling games with better graphics and smoother performance compared to the original. In addition, Nintendo claims the Switch 2 offers improved battery life and enhanced wireless connectivity. In short, nearly every aspect of performance has been upgraded.

Nintendo is also putting a stronger focus on social features this time around. A new camera accessory allows players to video chat with friends while gaming, adding a new layer of connection to multiplayer sessions. The console also supports local game sharing, letting you play multiplayer titles with nearby friends who also own a Switch 2. This camera is just one of several new accessories that will be available for the system.

All of these improvements, however, come at a higher cost. The price of the Switch 2 has been bumped up significantly to $449.99 – a $150 increase over the original. Whether this jump is due to tariffs or the added investment in design and hardware, it means gamers will have to pay a premium for the latest features.
