Pixar’s “Coco” is coming back for another song.
Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that a sequel to Pixar’s 2017 Oscar-winning feature “Coco” would be coming soon during Thursday’s annual meeting of shareholders webcast. The company then announced “Coco 2” will debut in theaters in 2029, with original director Lee Unkrich returning to direct, alongside original co-director Adrian Molina.
Since “Coco” was released into theaters on Nov. 22, 2017, its importance to the company has only grown. The movie, directed by Lee Unkrich, has inspired everything from an elaborate live show at the Disney Parks to a dinner theater experience on the recent Disney Treasure cruise ship. It has also become a key part of Disney’s Halloween offerings, with multiple airings on linear Disney channels during the holiday and major placement on Disney+.
And the emphasis on “Coco” is only expanding.
At the D23 Expo last year, the first-ever “Coco” ride was announced for Disney California Adventure, part of the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. During the presentation, it was noted that the attraction was inspired by classic Disney rides like Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion and that Disney would be “bringing our skeletal cast of characters to life in a big way through the latest Audio-Animatronics technology” (according to Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences).
The original film followed young Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) as he travels to the Land of the Dead, where he meets long-lost family members and discovers an uncomfortable truth about his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), a famous singer. It was full of wondrous imagery and jubilant music, with “Remember Me,” written by Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez winning the Best Original Song Oscar.
Other upcoming Pixar films include “Elio” (out in June), “Hoppers” (March 2026) and “Toy Story 5” (June 2026). They also have “Incredibles 3” in development.
