Ben Stiller has promised that viewers won’t have to wait another three years for the third season of his hit Apple TV+ show Severance.

Speaking on an episode of Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast, the series director and executive producer hinted that, despite the fact a third season has not been officially confirmed yet, there is a plan in place.

When asked by Travis “Are we going to have to wait three years for season three to come out?”, Stiller said: “No, no, the plan is not, definitely not. The plan is not, and hopefully we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon. But it will not be that.”

Earlier in the episode, he said: “We were off the air for three years. We got hit with the strikes, there was a writers’ and actors’ strike, and it took us a while to regroup after that.

“I think we shot for 186 days on Season 2. So there’s a lot of shooting, and editing, and editing takes a while. But thank goodness the audience was there when we came back on.

“The challenge was just to get people who hadn’t seen the show to watch the first season. Apple did a really good job of getting the word out, and we did as much press as we could. But also, three years later, Apple TV+ is actually a different situation there now, they have more viewers. When we started out, we were one of the first shows.”

Severance is one of the most talked-about shows on TV right now, with fans praising its return and describing it as “peak television”.

The second season has delivered numerous revelations, including Helly’s (Britt Lower) infiltration of the MDR department as her innie, and an episode consisting largely of flashbacks dedicated to Mark (Adam Scott) and Gemma (Dichen Lachman) that some fans have called a “masterpiece”.

Even Barack Obama is a fan of the show – though he didn’t have time for a voice cameo – and the hype around Severance has seen some viewers descending on the real-life office where the series is filmed.

Season two landed a five-star review from NME, with James Mottram writing: “As things get all the more intriguing by the minute, Severance is a show best watched on high alert. For example, graffiti scrawled in the background reads “Who is alive?”

“By the time The Stone Roses’ ‘Love Spreads’ hits the soundtrack, with Ian Brown wailing “Let me put you in the picture / Let me show you what I mean”, you’ll be begging for the Severance team to do the same. Don’t stress it, though. Enjoy the ride and let this unique show tease and titillate your brain until you finally submit.”
