Netflix is gearing up to unleash the long-awaited anime series adaptation of Mokumokuren’s hit psychological horror manga “The Summer Hikaru Died” this year, and the news comes with new images and character details.
The streamer hasn’t announced an official release date just yet, but the upcoming series will be available on Netflix worldwide in 2025.
The hit manga series followed “an ordinary high school boy, Yoshiki, who experiences various mysterious incidents in his life with Hikaru, a mysterious being who imitates his best friend Hikaru Indou. The story of “whatever it is” and the boy’s madness has garnered significant attention, making it a must-see anime film.”
“The Summer Hikaru Died” is directed by Ryohei Takeshita (“Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night”) and produced by CygamesPicture.
Key character details:
Yoshiki Tsujinaka CV: Chiaki Kobayashi
A high school student living in Kubitachi Village. He struggles with accepting the fact that his childhood friend, Hikaru Indou, has been replaced by something else, yet continues to go about his daily life with it. He has a fondness for animals and insects.

New images reveal Yoshiki and Hikaru standing under a clear blue sky in the setting of their hometown, Kubitachi Village. An ominous figure known as “DORODORO” and Hikaru’s face is appearing on the back of Yoshiki. Chainsaw Man episode director Masanobu Hiraoka serves as “Dorodoro” animator. Check out the new images and a teaser below.
Those attending can visit the special booth of KADOKAWA, the manga’s publisher, where visitors can experience the world of “The Summer Hikaru Died.” Chiaki Kobayashi and Shuichiro Umeda will also appear at the convention for a special presentation.
