Mauritius Duty Free and Gebr. Heinemann unveil upgraded stores at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport
We spoke to Mauritius Duty Free purchasing and supply partner Gebr. Heinemann about the refreshed design and product offer in the refreshed stores, which bring an enhanced sense of place.

MAURITIUS. Refurbished duty-free shops have been opened in partnership by Mauritius Duty Free Paradise Co. (MDFP) and Gebr. Heinemann at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International.
The newly refurbished Arrivals Premium Store has almost doubled in size to 425sq m, while the Arrival Main Shop spans 490sq m. The upgraded Departure Main Store covers 1,400sq m, contributing to a total 2,400sq m duty-free retail space in the departures area.
In addition to purchasing and supply to the stores, Gebr. Heinemann supports MDFP with marketing and exclusive shop-in-shop concepts, brand staging and personalisation.
The stores’ product line-up includes a curated mix of international luxury beauty and spirits brands, plus an authentic local flavour with Mauritian specialities such as artisanal liquors and crafts.
Asked by The Moodie Davitt Report about the refreshed design details, Gebr. Heinemann said it aimed “to create an atmosphere that fits the island of Mauritius”.
This has been manifested, it noted, through deep, sea-blue commercial-grade tiles, selected to evoke the island’s surrounding ocean.
This offers a striking visual and physical path that directs the flow of passengers through the space, the German travel retailer added.
Natural woods feature prominently, which Gebr. Heinemann said reflect the naturalness of the island, creating “an inviting and premium shopping atmosphere that aligns with international standards”.
It also highlighted sustainability as a key focus, with the refurbishment integrating eco-conscious materials and sustainable design elements, supporting Gebr. Heinemann’s environmental responsibility goals.
Gebr. Heinemann Area Sales Manager Middle East Africa Harald Suenner told us: “This project is an example of how we are shaping the future of duty-free retail together with our local partners worldwide.
“The reopening of Mauritius Duty Free Paradise reinforces our commitment to enhancing the customer journey and delivering unforgettable shopping experiences.”
“Our close partnership with MDFP reflects our shared commitment to innovation and excellence in travel retail. With our deep expertise in curating premium brand selections and shop-in-shop concepts, these newly designed stores bring a seamless and inspiring retail environment to SSR International Airport.”
Mauritius Duty Free Paradise Co. CEO Lormus Bundhoo commented, “These new duty-free shops represent a significant step forward in the range of offerings now available to all travellers arriving in Mauritius. It allows MDFP to showcase a wider variety of premium products and better cater to passengers whose needs and expectations are constantly evolving.”
