The Marvel Universe is no stranger to resurrections. In PHOENIX #11, hitting shelves this May, Jean Grey will come face-to-face with someone she never expected to see again—her long-lost sister, Sara Grey.
Teased as a game-changing return, the reunion will be penned by writer Stephanie Phillips, with visuals from new series artist Roi Mercado. Jean Grey, soaring through the cosmos at the height of her Phoenix-powered abilities, has faced countless threats and cosmic conundrums. But nothing will prepare her for the moment she sees Sara—alive and well—despite her tragic demise at the hands of the Phalanx in the early ‘90s.

What follows in PHOENIX #12, out in June, is an exploration of one of the X-Men’s longest-unsolved mysteries: how Sara has returned and why now. According to Phillips, the story isn’t just about another shocking resurrection, but about Jean’s deeply personal struggle with responsibility versus longing.
“Jean’s story is often defined by resurrection, so it feels deeply personal to ask her to confront the return of someone she lost and never expected to see again,” Phillips said. “This forces Jean to grapple with more than just the weight of the Phoenix… It’s about the deeply human conflict between responsibility and longing. Can she balance the cosmic burden of what she is with the personal desire to reclaim what she lost?”

With a new cover by Lucas Werneck, PHOENIX #12 is poised to be an unforgettable chapter in Jean Grey’s ever-evolving journey. Fans can preorder PHOENIX #11 and #12 now at their local comic shop.
