“Assassin’s Creed Shadows” Initial Sales Strong

Ubisoft’s ancient Japan-set “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” launched on console and PC last week and is being pegged as a make-or-break title for the publisher after a series of high-profile disappointments.

Early signs have been good – the company announced on the weekend that the title surpassed two million players in two days, higher than both “Assassin’s Creed: Origins” and “Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey”.

Now, VGC has received sales data from sources that appear to confirm that. According to their numbers, ‘Shadows’ delivered the second-highest Day 1 sales revenue in the franchise’s history – behind only “Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla”.

As noted, it’s even more impressive considering the title launched in March rather than the lucrative Thanksgiving window for gaming, and there was no pandemic boost like there was for ‘Valhalla’.

One advantage it did have was that this marks the first major Ubisoft game to release day one on Steam since 2019. As a result, PC sales were much more robust than usual and represented around 27% of total ‘activations’ with Steam having a “significant role” in that.

Additionally, ‘Shadows’ had Ubisoft’s best-ever Day 1 launch on the PlayStation digital store, and was the most wish-listed Ubisoft title of all time.
